You see, they talk about it differently in the neighbourhood. Everybody knows it – one stone is not like the other. One – lumpy as a fist, another – like a speckled egg, another one – black and smooth like devil’s shit. These aren’t stones, we have plenty of them around here. Why not somewhere else? My grandfather used to find loads of them, my father never found any, even though it was the same field. Maybe, he just didn’t want to say…

When there was famine after the war, some people tried to eat them. When boiled, they get soft and turn red. One guy, who ate them, lost his voice for two weeks… he did nothing but stare all day long… They called a doctor and a priest, all for nothing. No one but an old lady… She knew a lot about herbs… told him to throw these bulbs away, incensed the room and she gave him some mixtures and he got better… But he wasn’t himself, you know… hardened from the inside, a heart of stone, became lukewarm about everything – life, women, even vodka… like a stranger to old friends. Then, he disappeared… sank like a stone. He hung himself, I was told… And, under his hanging body, they found loads of these stone bulbs.

Another guy ate them too and he laughed at all that talk and even boasted that it’s tasty and free… and nothing happened to him for a while… But one day he felt a pain in his gut… a terrible constipation… His tubes were just blocked up, you know… He didn’t go to the lav for two months as if he had a stone in his stomach… Only when he circled the field three times on his knees, throwing these bulbs onto the ground, was he eventually relieved… These stones… apparently, must stay in the ground…

Different educated people came here, you know, they dug some holes, they measured things, brought machines in… One of them rented a room at my next door neighbour… But then, they went back to the city, when one woman lost her mind because of these stones… She was running naked in the fields… I sadly didn’t see it, people told me… They don’t come back any more…

These stones, you know, are everywhere here… On my field, and on my neighbour’s. There is nothing to be scared of… When I was building my house, I threw lots of them into the foundations… And do you think it is a coincidence that thunderbolts, thieves and diseases miss my house? There is nothing to be scared of… They just must stay in the ground…

Tu, Panie, w okolicy różnie mówią… Każdy to wie – kamień kamieniowi nierówny.

Doktora wzywali i nic, księdza wzywali i nic.

    I.
It doesn’t always turn out well.
To succeed you have to choose a good place. But it sometimes doesn’t work anyway.
In general, the place is the most important. It can’t be too close to water, because waves can sweep over it. It can’t be too far neither, because it is too dry and it doesn’t work. Water is necessary. But you have to be quick and make it before a wave comes.

    II.
And sand. It has to be dry and warm. Everybody knows that a place at the edge of the forest is never good. It is too shaded and there are too many vertical things. The vertical always disturbs.

    III.
When you find a place, you have to dig a hole. Bad holes need to be filled back straight away. The hole needs to be round and have a clear edge. Otherwise, the shade gets in…

    IV.
The edges need to be smooth, but the inside has to be broken up/scarified and damp. You can’t use a metal shovel, because it won’t work. A stick is good, but you have to be careful, because it is vertical.

    V.
You have to do that quickly, cause sand can’t completely dry out. You can’t change it or pour water over it.

    VI.
Light is important too. It has to be lit on the front. You have to check all the time if the shade doesn’t get in. The worst is the shade from the forest, because this thing can happen.

    VII.
After that, you can start spilling the dust. But not in the wind, cause the dust is very light and it could mix with the sand. And then it wouldn’t work. You have to pour it evenly, leading the line to the place. Shells don’t break it, sticks do… be careful with stones, because it depends…

    VIII.
The place needs to be filled with the dust carefully. And then, another layer again. Horizontal lines help, hollows and tracks don’t.
You have to leave it then, and go away. If it was done properly, it would work.
    But sometimes it doesn’t.
To succeed you have to choose a good place.

    I.

    II.
No i piasek.

    III.
Kiedy się znajdzie miejsce, trzeba zrobić dobry dołek. Niedobre dołki trzeba szybko zasypać.
Dołek powinien być okrągły i musi mieć wyraźny brzeg, żeby cień nie padał do środka.

    IV.

Sypać trzeba równo, prowadząc linię aż do miejsca.

    VIII.
Miejsce trzeba zasypać dokładnie pyłem. Potem jeszcze jedną warstwą. Linie poziome pomagają, dołki i ślady – nie.
Potem trzeba zostawić i pójść. Jeśli było nasypane dobrze, to się uda.
    Ale nie zawsze wychodzi…
Żeby się udało, musi być dobre miejsce.

Sometimes young frogs squeeze into grooves in stones or other hard materials. They get through narrow slits to little caves and fall into a coma. Safe from attack, they set themselves a hunting spot. If a place is convenient enough, they are able to catch flies and other insects without coming up to the surface. A frog sits in its cave and remains motionless in its frog’s existence. When it is hungry, it makes hthhlop! with its tongue and if it gets lucky the meal is caught. So it sits and grows. It grows but it doesn’t leave its cave. Because it is a good cave – a comfortable Lebensraum. The frog does not think about the future, but sometimes it should. As it grows bigger, it gets harder to leave its hiding place. Eventually, the sole fact that it no longer fits inside its cave urges it to escape. But it cannot squeeze through the crevice, which it got through before. Its body fills the entire space. When it is hungry, it still eats. When it eats – it grows. But it is constrained by the walls of its hiding place. Its body slowly starts to take the shape of the den, instead of the shape determined by its frog’s genes. The cave, from the safe hideout it once was, changes into a Spanish shoe, which tightens around it claustrophobically. Game over. The frog cannot avoid eating, because it would starve to death. When it eats, it grows. In the end, it is not able to grow any more and it dies pressurized by its own self.
